I have been away from the on the road segment over the last few months as I have been tied up composing teaching and traveling over the last 6 months from Merida to Morelia and Mexico City then back to Morelia in October presenting my work for electronics and instruments and collaborative works with video. After that travels to the UK and Spain for lectures and the premiere of a new work at the COMA Festival in Madrid in late November. The spring brought travels to Montreal and Virgina for more of the same.
Now in April I find myself at the beautiful city of Bogliasco very near Genoa on the Mediterranean working on a new piece for 2 violins and orchestra being written for Igor Gruppman and his wife Vesna. Igor is the concertmaster of the Rotterdam Philharmonic and Vesna is also in the orchestra both are gifted artists. Should be a very positive and productive 4 weeks.
I am at the Peninsula Sonora Festival in Merida, Mexico where yesterday morning to open the festival I gave a presentation at the Anthropological Museum in town on my music and aesthetic concerns (references and music, the search for silence, and the perception of time). I was interviewed by the local TV station and am very impressed by the interest in the community in the festival. Kudos to Elias Puc and Javier Alvarez for organizing this important event. Tonight my work despues de los humanos with video by Jacek Kolasinski is being presented by cellist Iracema de Andrade and Saturday I conduct my work silencios imaginados with the Sequenza Sur Ensemble on the closing concert. There are some excellent composers and performers participating and it is a pleasure to be here. Next week I am in Morelia presenting a portrait concert at the CNMAS and the week after in Mexico City at the National Center for the Arts doing a portrait concert and lecture.
Just finished two more works here at the Millay Colony (which I brought with me in progress) – one for the Chicago based Fonema Consort (mezzo-soprano, flute, percussion, and electronics) that will be premiering the work at the visiones sonoras festival in Morelia, Mexico in October and the second an electronic work for my colleague and friend video artist Jacek Kolasinski for a video work being premiered at his opening at the Frost Museum in Miami next month…Now I am busy working/re-working my interdisciplinary video opera parallel universes – spending a good bit of time thinking about which way to go – this is a great place to do that – quite beautiful – am here until next week so am taking advantage of every minute…
